Sex Ratio Theory, Ancient and Modern — An 18 Century Debate about Intelligent Design and the Development of Models in Evolutionary Biology

چکیده

The design argument for the existence of God took a probabilistic turn in the 17 and 18 centuries. Earlier versions, such as Thomas Aquinas’ 5 way, usually embraced the premise that goaldirected systems (things that “act for an end” or have a function) must have been created by an intelligent designer. This idea – which we might express by the slogan “no design without a designer” – survived into the 17 and 18 centuries, and it is with us still in the writings of many creationists. The new version of the argument, inspired by the emerging mathematical theory of probability, removed the premise of necessity. It begins with the thought that goal-directed systems might have arisen by intelligent design or by chance; the problem is to discern which hypothesis is more plausible. With the epistemic concept of plausibility characterized in terms of the mathematical concept of probability, the design argument was given a new direction.

Ancient Iranian Earthquakes: Chehr-Abad Salt Mine

Modern plate tectonic theory, the development of earthquake prediction and the mitigation of earthquake hazards are based on the study of earthquakes during the twentieth century. Investigation of earthquakes over a much longer period, although in no way invalidating the global importance of plate tectonics, shows that patterns of seismic activity do change with time and that areas of intense s...

Sex in the '90s

The origin and nature of the differences between the sexes is likely to have been a subject of debate since prehistory. Many theories proposed by the ancient philosophers were interesting, if inaccurate (the “heat” of lovemaking does not determine maleness, as proposed by Aristotle, but the temperature of embryonic development is indeed important for some species). The debate began to find a go...

His concerns about dealing with ethics orig...

Book Review: Understanding Evolution

Understanding evolutionary change has become more complicated in recent years. After a number of theoretical expansions from Darwin's theory of evolution to neo-Darwinism and the Modern Synthesis, evolutionary theory is currently influenced by a fundamental debate about how to expand its theoretical framework even more (Pigliucci and Müller, 2010). This debate is driven by research results on t...
